Eligibility For Benefits

Overview

Central College provides a variety of benefits to employees based on their status and other factors of their position. This policy outlines and defines details around eligibility and some unique situations where standard eligibility may be adjusted. 

Definitions

Eligibility: defined requirements that employees must meet to be able to participate in or receive a benefit offered by Central College. 

Benefits: various offerings by the college that provide an advantage or participation in a program based on employment at the college.

Responsibilities

Employee (staff and faculty): responsible for being aware of benefit offerings to sign up for benefits as needed and to contribute the employee premium for those benefits, they select. 

Talent, Equity and Engagement Office: responsible for ensuring consistent application of eligibility for staff and faculty based on types of status within the institution. Also responsible for overall benefits administration. 

Policy Details

Central College provides a variety of benefits for staff and faculty as a result of their position at the college. The following information outlines specific details of eligibility. 

  1. Employee status impacts eligibility for various benefit plans and is defined below. 
    1. Full-time status: FTE is .75 or greater. Eligible for full benefits package (see annual benefits summary document for details and applicable premiums).
    2. Part-time, benefits eligible status: FTE is .5 to .75 FTE. (Through 1/1/26)
    3. Part-time, benefits eligible employees are eligible for health, dental, vision, short term disability, long term disability, life insurance, and employer retirement contributions.
    4. Part-time, benefits eligible employees are eligible for prorated vacation, sick and volunteer time. 
    5. Part-time, no benefits: FTE is defined as .49 and below. Employee is not eligible for any employer sponsored benefits. Can voluntarily contribute to retirement with no eligibility for employer contributions. 
    6. Flex status: FTE is defined as .14, no set schedule or guaranteed hours. Not eligible for any employer sponsored benefits.
    7. Intern: FTE can be at any level. Eligible for vacation time only (prorated) if over .5 FTE. Eligible for up to 80 hours, prorated based on the FTE of the internship (ie, .75 FTE internship, 60 hours vacation will be awarded.) Not eligible for other benefits or to contribute to retirement.
    8. Seasonal: FTE can be at any level. Not eligible for benefits or to contribute to retirement.
    9. Adjunct: No FTE assigned. Not eligible for benefits or to contribute to retirement.

2. Most benefits become effective on the first of the month following the date of hire. If the hire date is the first working day of the month, benefits will be effective on the date of hire.

3. The college pays a portion of benefit costs for employees and some benefits require employee contributions. When allowed by federal and state law, employee contributions will be deducted from paychecks on a pre-tax basis. 

4. Eligibility for various benefit plans is determined by the specific benefit plan. Generally, if there is inconsistency between this policy and the benefit plan, the details in the benefit plan will be applied. 

5. Benefit offerings may change at anytime and the college reserves the right to end or edit any benefit plan as necessary.
