Volunteer Time in the Community
Overview
Central strives to be an involved member of our community and encourages employees to volunteer their time in support of community events and organizations. Employees who qualify are awarded time off to invest in the community.
Definitions
Volunteer time: hours awarded to qualifying employees that allow them to be paid for time spent volunteering in the community.
Responsibilities
Employee: responsible for requesting time off from their supervisor in advance to utilize awarded volunteer time. Also responsible for recording volunteer hours used based on the process for non-exempt and exempt staff.
Policy Details
Volunteer time is awarded in hours to employees based on eligibility criteria for each fiscal year (July 1 – June 30) for their use. Volunteer time eligibility includes staff who qualify for benefits (.5 FTE and above) with the college. Faculty do not qualify for volunteer time.
- Awarded hours
- Employees are awarded 16 hours of volunteer time annually.
- Awarded hours are not prorated based on FTE.
- Approval process
- Employees will request time off from their supervisor in advance to allow time to support their volunteer activity outside of work.
- Last minute requests for volunteer time may be denied depending on business needs.
- Pay process
- Non-exempt employees will need to enter their volunteer hours according to reporting processes and ensure it is reported per the payroll cycle on time for on-time payment.
- Exempt employees need to report the time spent volunteering on my.central where vacation and sick time is reported for documentation of hours used.
- Volunteer time is not considered worked time for reasons of calculating overtime.
