Responsibilities
Employee: communicate with their direct supervisor when they experience the loss of a family member and will need bereavement time off
Supervisor: consistently apply the policy around bereavement time off for employees as needs arise. Notify the Talent, Equity, and Engagement Office when an employee experiences the loss of a family member.
Policy Details
Time off is provided for an employee when they experience the loss of an immediate or close family member with the following provisions.
- Eligibility
- Employees .50 FTE or more qualify for bereavement leave benefits.
- Employees less than .50 FTE will be given prorated time away for bereavement.
- Confirmation via an obituary or service schedule may be requested.
- Bereavement time
- Up to 5 days of bereavement leave are available for the death of a family member (as defined above).
- Bereavement days do not need to be taken consecutively and can be arranged with the employee’s supervisor to align best with the situation.
- Other considerations
- For some individuals, families are defined in other ways. In this case, employees should discuss their need/request for bereavement time with their supervisor. The supervisor should consult with the TEEO if other arrangements are requested for consideration.
